Dominion of the DONE!

I wrapped up the final round of revisions on Dominion of the Damned this morning. Of course, there’s still a lot to do before its official release. So what happens next?

First, I need to make an electronic Advanced Review Copy to offer free to reviewers (and if you’d like a free ARC to read and review, just let me know in the comments–bearing in mind that by accepting a copy you are indeed agreeing to write an honest review of it somewhere, e.g. Amazon, Good Reads or your very own blog). And then I need to load it into my Kindle and give it one more read-through to look for any errors that I missed, especially on scenes that got added or rewritten.

This Is How Stories Happen

I’ve always had something of a love/hate relationship with my home state. I think this is due largely to the fact that I’ve always had a healthy case of wander lust, but too few opportunities to satisfy it. I have as a consequence lived my entire life in Oklahoma, a state which tends to be the butt of jokes and redneck stereotypes. To be fair, the things we often make the news for aren’t really things to be proud of. It has a certain amount of culture, but it’s also sorely lacking in important things like Ikea and In-N-Out Burger and truly excellent pizza. The weather here is subject to unpleasant extremes, which provides for pretty good conversation-starters but isn’t all that fun to live through. But on the other hand, it’s quite a pretty state, especially up here in the Northeastern corner of the state where I live. There’s a reason they call this part of the state Green Country.

I grew up in a rural housing addition nestled atop a set of cliffs overlooking Oologah Lake, just a few miles across the shore from the birthplace and boyhood home of Will Rogers. Yes, that Will Rogers, the cowboy philosopher, vaudeville entertainer and movie star, the one with the Broadway show about his life, who never met a man he didn’t like. About eight miles up the road from my neighborhood in the opposite direction sits the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, where he and his family are buried. Growing up halfway between the man’s birthplace and final resting place, it’s kind of hard not to know a little bit about him.

Friday Five: TV Vampires

Between yesterday being Bram Stoker’s birthday, and me being thisclose to finishing revisions on my vampire/zombie novel, it seems appropriate for this week’s Friday Five to count down my Top Five Vampires of the small screen (but sorry, Mr. Stoker, Dracula didn’t make the cut).

I have a confession – I haven’t seen True Blood or Vampire Diaries, and the little bit I have seen of Twilight kind of made me want to find Stephanie Meyer and kick her in the shins. Which is kind of irrelevant, since this is about TV vampires, but it still bears mentioning. For me, the Buffyverse was pretty much the pinnacle of my vampire fandom, and it pretty much ruined all other vampires for me. Nevertheless, although this list could easily consist entirely of the Fearsome Foursome plus Harmony, I’ve limited my choices to only three Buffyverse vampires. I’m sure it surprises nobody that they top my list.

1. Spike – Has there ever been a redemption arc as compelling or heart-breaking as Spike’s evolution from bad boy Slayer arch-nemesis to lovesick anti-hero to full-fledged noble hero? I think not. And in all of his incarnations, Spike managed to be equal parts dead sexy and hilarious. HE is the one who ruined me for all other vampires. They just don’t make ’em like Spike anymore.

It’s November! Write Like the Wind!

It’s the first day of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, for short)! For the first time in seven years, I’m not starting out November 1st in a mad rush to get words on the screen, which is simultaneously a relief and a little sad-making. I’m kind of envious of those who are taking part in it this year, especially today. Today, it’s all about enthusiasm and possibility. Today, the words flow freely and it’s all you can do to type (or scribble in your notebook) fast enough to keep up with all of the ideas in your head. Today, you’re just starting your trek up Everest, and there is no doubt in your mind that you’ll conquer the mountain, and it’s all excitement and adrenaline and not at all a struggle or a drudgery. Enjoy this day, my little Nano-padawans.

I want to share a piece of advice for when that uphill climb becomes a bit steeper and less of a joy. (more…)
